DJ LYAN Becomes First Southeast Asian Artist To Play Ultra Japan
DJ LYAN has become the first Southeast Asian artist to play Ultra Japan.
The London-born DJ, producer, and songwriter delivered a milestone opening day performance at this year’s ninth edition of Ultra Japan, which returned to Tokyo’s Odaiba Ultra Park from September 14-15.
DJ LYAN, who has attracted worldwide attention for his unique blend of EDM and South Asian sounds, shared the festival’s famous mainstage with huge names such as Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Alesso, and ISOKNOCK, captivating the crowd with his unique fusion of global rhythms and electronic beats.
DJ Lyan’s signature style was on display throughout the performance, which journeyed through South Asian melodies, heavy bass drops and energetic electronic anthems, reaching its peak as the artist played out his latest track, “Shade (Chaiya),” a bouncing Bollywood house track that samples Sapna Awasthi and Sukhwinder Singh’s 1998 Bollywood hit, “Chaiyaa Chaiyaa,” and is featured on his new EP, Thank You Come Again.
The EP arrived on August 30 as a key release for burgeoning record label DESI TRILL, a new imprint under Universal Music dedicated to showcasing South Asian sounds as the region’s contemporary music scene continues to expand with new artists and varied genres. The label was founded by music executive and former member of UK garage collective So Solid Crew, Shabz Naqvi, and Roc-Nation co-founder Ty-Ty Smith in September 2023.
With the release, DJ LYAN’s reputation continues to rise, earning radio support from Zane Lowe’s World First and BBC Radio 1Xtra, as well as earning placement on Spotify’s editorial playlists and TikTok’s #SouthAsian page.
